33 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#33: Meeting Darth Vader at Mervyns

It was the late 70’s at Mervyns in West Covina, California. The air was electric. The Dark Lord of the Sith was near. I was 7 or 8 years old and couldn’t wait to meet Darth Vader. Back in the day, there were costumed characters at shopping malls, Toys R Us and different department stores drumming up excitement (and sales). At the time, I didn’t know that it wasn’t the REAL Darth Vader. And honestly it didn’t matter. A part of Star Wars was right there in front of me, walking by in all his glory. I don’t think I ever got a picture with him (and believe me, I have made up for it 10 fold since), but I will always remember the time I saw him by the escalator of Mervyns.

I found these images online of other store visits by Vader, Chewbacca and others. Enjoy the nostalgia.

34 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#34: Marvel’s Star Wars (2015) action figure variants

There are many, many variant covers for comic books out there these days. Star Wars #1 alone had something like 75 different covers! But, the most creative ones out there are the action figure variants for the new Star Wars series. Mocked up to look like the old action figure packages, these variants are featuring a different character each issue. Even if you are not a fan of variants, you have to admit that these are pretty creative.

36 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#36: Hammerhead action figure

This dude is awkward, but awesome. The curve of this Ithorian’s neck is what sets him apart from other action figures. I also dig the blue one-piece suit he is wearing and his unique feet. Seen only briefly in the Cantina scene of Star Wars: A New Hope, Hammerhead stands head and shoulder above the rest.

37 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#37: C-3P0’s Cereal

From what I remember about this breakfast cereal, it wasn’t very good. It tasted pretty bland and awful. I would beg my parents for it and then choke it down as it cut up the roof of my mouth. BUT, it was a Star Wars cereal, and that meant having some form of Star Wars at the breakfast table. Plus, free toy inside!!! (although usually that meant a cut out mask on the back)

38 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#38: The Dagobah Cave scene from The Empire Strikes Back

When I first saw The Empire Strikes Back, I didn’t understand the Dagobah Cave scene. I was young and didn’t get why Darth Vader was there, but then had Luke’s head inside. (Symbolism is lost on an 8 year old) But, as years went on and I saw it many, many more times, I grew to appreciate what it stands for not only in the movie and the Star Wars universe, but in the hero’s journey at large. Yoda’s words “only what you take with you” ring true, but it a dark mystery cave or how you interact with others or what you put into opening your own business. Attitude and outlook, what is inside you vs. what you let control you- these are ideals that have stuck with me thanks to the Star Wars universe.

39 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#39: Gus and Duncan’s Guide to Star Wars Cast & Crew Items

In one of my former lives, I worked in the film industry. One of my favorite things about this world was the cast and crew exclusive items. Sometimes it was a hat or t-shirt from whatever project you were working on. This book by Gus Lopez and Duncan Jenkins is FILLED with cast and crew items from the Star Wars movies. From t-shirts to hats to stationary to Christmas cards, this book has it all. It is super cool to see some of these items that you would never know existed any other way. If you find a copy, definately check it out.

40 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#40: Y-Wing Fighter

Here we are! Only 40 days away and getting into the meat of this countdown. I have always liked the look of the Y-Wing. Such a cool design. It’s versatile too, good for a dogfight or a bombing run. They really gained my attention when Luke flew one in the animated segment of the Star Wars Holiday Special. They didn’t fare very well on the attack of the Death Star, but neither did many of the X-Wings.

41 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is today’s entry:

#41: Obi-Wan Kenobi Force FX Lightsaber

This was the lightsaber I wish I had growing up. I love this thing. It lights up, make the sound when you move it (or strike with it) and has a metal hilt. Granted, most of the time it sits in my office at home, unused. But, I have been in a few fights with it. And it holds up pretty well.
