3 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is the Top 10:

#3: Boba Fett

Boba Fett doesn’t say much in the movies. He doesn’t have much screen time or isn’t a major character. In fact, his name is never said in The Empire Strikes Back. But, he is extremely memorable. Just look at his costume and you know he has seen some action. Tasked with hunting down the Millennium Falcon, Fett wastes no time in following them to Cloud City, with no disintegrations of course. I feel there is a similarity between him and Clint Eastwood’s ‘Man With No Name’ character. They both are bounty hunters, they both are men of few words, their actions define their character and they are both a couple of my favorite characters in film history. There has been a lot of expanded universe stories about him, some good, some not so much. I always liked the comic book stories with him (surprise, surprise). One thing I do NOT like about him is his death. Going out as a burp joke isn’t very fitting. But, he lives on in my (and many others) minds as the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy!

4 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

#4: The Jedi Teachers

Obi-Wan Kenobi. Yoda. Qui-Gon Jinn. These masters passed along wisdom and training in the path to becoming a Jedi. They are the ones behind the hero’s journey. Obi-Wan helped Luke alone his path to learning the ways of the Force. Ever watchful over the young Skywalker, even in death, he sent him to Yoda, the Jedi Master who trained him. Yoda trained Luke, helped him control the Force. Yoda knew the power that lay inside of Luke and helped shape his destiny. Qui-Gon Jinn was of a different era. He was Jedi Master to his apprentice, a young Obi-Wan. It was Qui-Gon’s maverick nature that set him apart. He believed in the Force, but also believed in himself, more so his instincts. Without these Jedi teachers, we may not have had a new hope for the galaxy.

#5: John Williams music

John Williams has set the standard by which all film scores should be judged. What themes are more iconic than Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Art, E.T. and, of course, Star Wars. When that orchestra blares out the beginning of the Star Wars theme…there is no equal to the feeling that overcomes me. The Imperial March is permanently a part of pop culture. The Star Wars soundtracks are on constant rotation in my music listening and would make my desert island record list for sure. I have many favorite tracks, but this one I always seem to go back to. It perfectly sets the mood for Obi-Wan to tell tales of the Jedi. I can’t wait to hear what new music Mr. Williams brings us next week.

6 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is the Top 10:

#6: Luke Skywalker

This is actually a favorite of mine that has developed in more recent years. For a long time, I had written Luke off as the whiny farmboy who wanted to go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters. But the more I thought about him, the more I liked him. The original trilogy is his hero’s journey. He begins as the farmboy, develops his skills through training (and gets taken down a peg or two by Yoda), flirts with the Dark Side, but ultimately comes out as the new hope for the Jedi. He makes mistakes along the way, but that is part of what makes him a hero. He learns from them. Leia’s journey is to become a stronger leader. Vader’s is redemption. But, it’s Luke’s journey that is the real story: the making of a hero.

#7: Return of the Jedi

Half-finished Death Star II. Speeder Bikes. Jabba the Hutt. Admiral Ackbar. These are just a few reasons why I love Return of the Jedi. The first time I saw it was at the Eastland Theater in Southern California. The newspaper had printed the wrong time and when my brothers and I showed up, it was right when Jabba’s Sailbarge was exploding. My brothers had already seen it, so they were fine. But I had to wait years until I finally saw the beginning of the movie on VHS.

It is a great movie. I know it can be hard to take the Ewoks seriously (I have poked fun). But, let’s remember THEY EAT HUMANS!!!! They were going to cook Han Solo. The clothes Princess Leia changed into were probably from another human they ate!!! Also, I’m not having any of this Special Edition stuff. I want the original ‘Yub Nub’ song. Because, as a wise man once told me, “no matter what happens, the teddy bears dance in the forest.”

#8: Vader

Darth Vader IS one of my favorite things about Star Wars, but I’m going to take this to a personal place and talk about an old friend. Vader was my wife Jennifer’s dog. She had him before I even met her. She used to joke that I liked her because her dog was named Vader. That’s not entirely true, although that was A reason. He was a lab/chow mix and was, at times, a scary looking dog. He commanded your attention, much like his namesake. But also like the Dark Lord of the Sith, there was good in him. A lot actually. He was sweet with kids and liked most people (except the mailman). He was, however a bully to other dogs, from time to time. Ironically, there used to be a hound dog down the street named Amidala that barked at him every time he walked by. I always got a chuckle out of that. He couldn’t be bothered to chase a ball and he always liked to knock me off of my skateboard. But, he also would walk up to you and rub his head against you in a loving way (of course he wanted a neck massage out of you, but still…). Vader passed away a few years ago and not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. We have our dogs Granger and Kirby now, but I will always have a spot for Vader in my heart.

Happy Wednesday Fankind! It’s been a crazy day here at Brian’s Comics. UPS lost, and then found one of our boxes, so we are pretty late on our post. BUT, we finally did get in the new BATMAN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES crossover!

9 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days leading up to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. Here is the Top 10:

#9: Princess Leia

Princess. Warrior. Boyhood crush. She is more than a damsel in distress. Sure, she had to be busted out of the holding cell on the Death Star, but after that, she was the one in charge. She is a respected leader in the Rebel Alliance and someone who can stand up to Han Solo of all people. Plus, she’s a Skywalker! (I know…spoiler alert) For me, her action figure was always in the mix, so I don’t know why there is a shortage of action figures for the female character of the Star Wars universe (listen up Disney!!!). I can’t wait to see how she has evolved in The Force Awakens. I’m sure she is still in charge.
