93 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars.  From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe.  It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related.  Here is today’s entry:

#93: R2-D2 and C-3P0 in Raiders of the Lost Ark

Another hidden jem, this one took me years to finally see.  I had heard about it, but never really saw it.  It is hard to see, so get you PAUSE fingers ready.

94 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe. It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related. Here is today’s entry:

#94: Power Droid “action” figure

I put the action in quotes because there really wasn’t much action to this little guy, but he was still one of my favorites. The ‘gonk’ noise he made in the movie was replaced by a clicking noise when you moved his legs. He may not fit in the Land Speeder or the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, but he made a great place for the other figures to hide behind, or stand on top of when they needed to look over something tall. So let’s hear it for Power Droid! Because they can’t all be R2-D2.

95 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe. It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related. Here is today’s entry:

#95: Lightsaber flash handles

The original lightsaber props were made from modified Graflex flash handles, the type you would see old-timey press photographers use. If you Google “graflex flash handle” you will see that not much modifications were needed for the actual prop. You will also see the crazy amount of money people are selling them for on eBay. The flash handles I have in my collection are not exactly the same models used for the original props, but you can see how with nothing done to them, they look just like lightsabers. One of them will eventually be turned into my own lightsaber.

96 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe. It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related. Here is today’s entry:

#96: Episode 1 trailer

Alright…hear me out. Before you get all “I hate Episode 1! What are you talking about?!?!?!” on me, let me explain. Remember back to 1998/1999 when we hadn’t had a Star Wars movie for 16 years. It shouldn’t be too hard to remember, seeing that we are kind of in the same place right now waiting for The Force Awakens. Think back to before we knew who Jar-Jar was or CG Yoda or honestly anything about the prequels. I know that I personally saw this trailer dozens of times. In fact, at a midnight screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark, they showed it after the movie “until you all go home.” I saw it 7 times that night. So watch it again through your 1998 eyes and remember the excitement. It is one of the reasons I still love this trailer.

97 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe. It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related. Here is today’s entry:

#97: Burger King Glasses

My siblings and I used to fight over who got to use what glass. We had two of the same from Star Wars with R2-D2 and C-3PO on them (my favorite), one from The Empire Strikes Back, also with R2 and 3PO, and two from Return of the Jedi, one with Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader and the other with Jabba the Hut and Princess Leia. Sadly, one of the two Star Wars glasses has broken, but the others are still getting good use today in our kitchen.

98 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In the 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars. From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe. It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related. Here is today’s entry:

#98: Marvel Star Wars comic: volume 1, issue #7 (1977)

I love the Star Wars comics. I’m sure that comes as no surprise to anyone. Issues #1-6 were the adaptation of the movie and hold a special place for me (see later on the countdown). But #7 was extra special. It was the first comic book to take place AFTER the movie. Now remember, this is before The Empire Strikes Back or any other the other sequels, prequels or expanded universe. This was Star Wars beyond “Star Wars”. It was a story about Han Solo and Chewbacca one their way to pay off Jabba the Hut, but get robbed by the space pirate Crimson Jack. Han and Chewie then lay low on planet Aduba-3 and help a priest to bury someone the town doesn’t want buried in there cemetery. It’s a fun read that eventually starts feeling like a retelling of the Magnificent Seven (which it then becomes in issue #8). It was also the “first step into a larger world.”

#99: Stormtrooper hitting his head in STAR WARS

If you blink, you miss it.  But once you see it, you can’t un-see it.  Once the door opens, pay attention to the trooper on the far right.

100 Days Until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

It is 100 days until STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in theaters, and to celebrate, I am counting down my 100 favorite things about Star Wars.  From now until December 18, 2015 I will be posting one of my favorite things from the Star Wars universe.  It can be from the movies, comic books or anything Star Wars related.  Let’s start with today’s entry:

#100: Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues) action figure

This one has always been a favorite and there are several reasons why.  Part of it is because it is one of the first figures of Luke to come out after the originals.  Another thing is that unlike the first Luke figure, this one had a lightsaber that was removable from his hand, and not built in.  It also introduced me to the word “fatigues”, which up until that point there really wasn’t a reason for an 8 year old to use that word.  He is also easy to identify with, costume wise.  He is not wearing a white bathrobe or an orange jumpsuit, but a simple tan pant/shirt ensemble.    That makes it a lot easier to imitate if you wanted to fight Stormtroopers in the back yard.   All in all, this makes him one of my favorite figures from my favorite of the Star Wars movies.
